Celebrating International Day of the Girl!

This is a good day to be a girl.  Especially if you live in London, Ontario Canada.

October 11 is International Day of the Girl, a day to celebrate all things 'girlie', and what it means to be a girl in 2012.  Today, I am celebrating by paying tribute to the first 'girl' I ever met.

As girls, we really have come a long way! There are more girls today playing sports than ever before, more girls graduating from high school, medical school, law school, business school, and the list goes on.  There are many fabulous women who still have a 'girl' in their hearts, who have paved the way for our daughters, neices and sisters, and made the road a little easier for them.  These 'girls' have carved their own paths, made up their own minds about what success looks like, what beauty looks like, and are wonderful examples and mentors for girls today who are choosing their own paths;

Bonnie Brooks, President of the Hudson's Bay Company

Carol Stephenson, Dean of the Richard Ivey Business School

Melissa Heeney, Occupational Therapist with the Thames Valley Children's Centre, and my sister.

Melissa, or Missy as I knew her when I first met her 45 years ago, is an example of a woman with a girl in her heart.  She is open minded about things that matter, supportive and loving toward her family and friends, talented and compassionate about her career.  She is a wonderful example for her daughters, neices and all of those around her of what it is to be beautiful and successful.

There are 'Missys' in every family, and we are lucky to have them!  It seems fitting that on International Day of the Girl, my family celebrates the day a truly beautiful girl was born. It is a blessing to be Missy's little sister.  I encourage girls everywhere to celebrate the Missys in their lives!

Congratulations Oakridge Secondary students!

The first ever "Ignite Oakridge" event was a huge success!

A very remarkable group of students at Oakridge Secondary school poured their hearts and their passion into this project.  Ignite Oakridge was the result of 8 weeks of vocal training, speech preparation, soul searching and courage.  Those in the audience were at times moved both to tears and laughter, were moved and inspired by the passionate stories told by the group.

Bravo to all of you for your courage and hard work!  You were truly a pleasure to work with, and I look forward to "Ignite Oakridge II".

Check back as well for details about a possible 'Ignite Lucas' event in the 2012-13 school year!

Upcoming Event: Ignite Oakridge

Ignite Oakridge is coming up on May 18th, and this very special event promises to inspire, impress and ignite your passion!!

At this event, you will hear speeches written by a remarkable group of young people at Oakridge Secondary School in London.  During the past few months, I have been working with this group to help them overcome their fears of speaking in public, and perfecting their speaking and presentation skills.  The students were given an assignment at the start of our sessions together; to write a speech about something they are passionate about.  The ideas are all their own, and come straight from their hearts.

You will be inspired by what you see and hear.  The future looks bright with these young people in charge!!!

Upcoming Event: Keynote Speech at the OSAID Leadership Conference

I am pleased to be attending the Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving Leadership Conference as a Keynote Speaker at Sheridan College on May 12th.  This remarkable group of young people and the work they do to prevent impaired, distracted driving has always impressed and inspired me.

I am also very proud of my students from the Graduating class in the Fanshawe Radio Broadcasting program.  They have created, written and produced a topical, poignant and compelling Public Service Announcement for OSAID that can be heard on radio stations across Ontario during the month of May.

I am very much looking forward to May 12th!

What People Are Saying

"Mindy was always a delight to work with! As a co-host on New Years' Eve at the Hilton her spunky professionalism shone through. The sell-out crowds were always quick to engage Mindy and she was eager to reciprocate. Mindy's energy and enthusiasm helped make New Years' Eve a great success!"

Darrin Pollard, Business Development
London Convention Centre

"Mindy put on a great presentation to 30 youths that were attending the National Leadership Conference (Canada Youth Against Impaired Driving) in May 2011. Mindy had the young individuals comfortable in getting up in front of their peers doing tongue twisters and impromptu conversations. The young leaders really enjoyed the interactive presentation and left feeling empowered and realizing that the way they speak really does matter!"
